"Personal Pursuit offers students a unique
opportunity to follow their passions and
develop skills at the same time."
Anne Sietsma
ATLAS-student

ATLAS University College Twente fosters creativity and initiative through the Personal
Pursuits program. Through this program, students have the opportunity to work on
projects and develop talents they are passionate about—artistic or educational,
cultural or technical.

Jasper learned how to build 3d models.
Tinka learned to craft educational
animations.
Florianne and Bart founded ATLANTIS,
the ATLAS student association.
Mark and Chris organized the ATLAS
ambassadors team.
Vera sharpened her drawing and
sketching skills.
Katrina took a closer look at creating ecological
awareness and communicating about green initiatives.
Nick is learning how to program by
building a cooking app.
Jim founded and directed the ATLAS student
orchestra in their first performance.
Finn explored the many uses of computer modelling.
Hannah became a ski instructor as a means
of studying human movement and mechanics.
Rick is broadening his cultural horizons
by learning Spanish.
Petra learned how to use cameras for
film and photography.
Lara designed an ATLAS community website.

visualizing my passion

Anne’s own Personal Pursuit grew from his interest in incorporating aesthetics into design.

"I learned to make representative sketches, and to use images to visualise ideas. I have found images to be a very powerful tool for communication.”

He also took classes at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts.

"I took classes every Tuesday. I learned a lot about the conceptual aspects of visualizing, and I learned to put my emotions on paper."

makes a difference

Anne’s own Personal Pursuit grew from his interest in incorporating aesthetics into design.

"I was on a team planning and developing new energy systems for the local municipality. In the project, we focused only on the functionality of the technology. In the future, I want to be able to incorporate aesthetics into the design. I’d like to address not only the efficiency of a windmill, but also how

the windmill park will look, and how it will fit into the community.”

Anne believes that Personal Pursuits are an opportunity to develop real-world skills, and a sketch he made for class has since been converted into a promotional poster for a conference on green technology.

"Personal Pursuits offer students a unique opportunity to follow their passions and develop skills at the same time."

personal development

According to Anne the Personal Pursuit program makes up for “something missing” in a traditional curriculum.

"It’s great to have an opportunity to pursue an area of personal interest. In fact, the Personal Pursuit program was a major reason I chose ATLAS,”says Anne. Studying a different domain or field of interest has been excellent for my personal development. Because I was free to choose the topic, I was highly motivated, especially when it was most challenging."
